This review is based on three years of real-world use with the Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM across photography, travel, video creation, YouTube content, vlogging, and family events.

Some camera gear impresses you when you first buy it. Other gear continues to impress you years later. For me, the Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM falls firmly into the second category.

I've been using this lens for the last three years across photography, travel, video creation, YouTube content, vlogging, and family events. During that time, it has become one of the most valuable lenses in my camera bag. In fact, if I had to choose one lens that expanded my creativity the most, the 10-18mm would be near the top of the list.

This isn't a technical review filled with charts and measurements. It's my real-world experience using this lens over three years of content creation.

Why I Bought This Lens

When I first started exploring photography and video creation, I quickly realized that standard kit lenses weren't wide enough for many situations. I wanted something that could help me capture wider landscapes, film YouTube videos, create travel content, record vlogs, shoot indoors, capture architecture, and add a different perspective to my photography.

The Canon 10-18mm seemed like an affordable way to enter the ultra-wide world. Looking back, it turned out to be one of my best photography purchases.

My Typical Usage Over 3 Years

This lens has been used extensively for travel photography, landscape photography, family trips, vlogging, YouTube videos, indoor photography, architecture, real estate-style shots, group photos, and handheld video recording.

Unlike some lenses that stay in the camera bag for specific occasions, this one gets used regularly whenever I need a wider perspective.

The First Thing You Notice: Everything Fits Into The Frame

The biggest advantage of the 10-18mm lens is obvious. You can fit significantly more into your frame. Whether I'm photographing mountains, beaches, historical monuments, city streets, hotel rooms, or family gatherings, the lens allows me to capture scenes that would simply be impossible with a standard zoom lens.

Many of my favorite travel photos over the last three years were taken with this lens.

Why I Love It For Video

This is where the lens has probably delivered the most value. When creating YouTube videos and vlogs, a wider lens makes a huge difference.

At 10mm, I can comfortably hold the camera while vlogging. More background fits into the frame. The footage feels immersive. The perspective is engaging without being overly distorted.

For travel vlogs and walking videos, the lens creates a much more professional look compared to standard kit lenses. Even today, it's one of my favorite lenses for casual video content.

Image Stabilization Is Surprisingly Useful

One feature I didn't fully appreciate when I bought the lens was Image Stabilization. Over the years, I've used it extensively for handheld video, travel photography, low-light situations, and quick shots without a tripod.

While it won't completely replace a gimbal, it certainly helps produce smoother footage and sharper handheld images. For creators who don't always want to carry extra equipment, this is a major advantage.

Image Quality

Considering its price, image quality has always impressed me. Photos are sharp, colorful, consistent, and easy to edit. The lens performs particularly well for landscapes, architecture, travel photography, and social media content.

No, it isn't an expensive L-series lens. But for its price category, the results are excellent. Even after three years, I'm still happy with the images it produces.

Travel Photography Experience

If I had to choose one lens for travel photography besides my primary zoom lens, this would be it. The ability to capture entire buildings, scenic landscapes, tight indoor spaces, and busy city streets makes it incredibly useful while traveling.

There have been countless occasions where this lens allowed me to capture a shot that simply wouldn't have been possible otherwise. For travel alone, it has justified its place in my camera bag.

What I Like Most

Extremely Wide Perspective

The ability to fit so much into the frame opens creative possibilities that standard lenses cannot offer.

Excellent For Vlogging

This remains one of my favorite lenses for YouTube and travel videos.

Lightweight Design

The lens is small, compact, and easy to carry during long trips.

Great Value For Money

Even after three years, I still believe it offers excellent value.

Reliable Image Stabilization

Particularly useful for handheld shooting and video creation.

What I Don't Like

Plastic Build

The lens feels lightweight, but it doesn't have the premium feel of Canon's higher-end lenses.

Limited Low-Light Performance

The variable aperture can become a limitation in darker environments.

Not A Daily Lens

It's a specialist lens. While fantastic for wide-angle work, it won't replace your standard zoom lens.

Has It Been Worth It After Three Years?

Absolutely. In fact, if I lost this lens tomorrow, I would seriously consider buying another one. The amount of creative flexibility it has added to my photography and video work far exceeds its cost.

It helped me create better travel photos, more engaging YouTube videos, improved vlogs, more dramatic landscapes, and better indoor shots. Very few pieces of camera equipment have delivered this much value over such a long period.

Final Verdict

After three years of photography, videography, travel, and content creation, the Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM remains one of my favorite lenses. It isn't the sharpest lens Canon has ever made. It isn't the most expensive. But it consistently delivers results and encourages creativity.

For photographers and content creators looking to explore ultra-wide photography and video without spending a fortune, it's one of the easiest lenses to recommend.

Pros

  • Excellent for travel photography — fits entire buildings, landscapes, and tight indoor spaces into the frame
  • Fantastic for YouTube and vlogging at 10mm, with an immersive, engaging perspective for handheld video
  • Lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry on long trips
  • Very good image quality for the price — sharp, colorful, and consistent results

Cons

  • Plastic construction lacks the premium feel of Canon's higher-end L-series lenses
  • Variable aperture limits low-light performance in darker environments
