Apple Watch Ultra 3 Review: Satellite Connectivity Finally Comes Into Its Own
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 brings two-way satellite messaging, a brighter always-on display, and multi-day battery life to Apple's adventure-focused flagship.
Satellite connectivity on the Apple Watch sounded like a gimmick when it was first announced, but after a week of testing on trails with no cell signal, the Ultra 3's ability to send and receive iMessages via satellite — without pulling out an iPhone — is a genuine safety feature. Combined with the brighter always-on display, which is now legible in direct sunlight without raising your wrist, this feels like the first Ultra revision that fully delivers on the "adventure watch" pitch.
Battery life in low-power mode now comfortably stretches to three days, which is a meaningful change for multi-day backpacking trips. The titanium build remains excellent, and the new band materials feel more durable than the originals. Our main reservation is the same one we've had since the Ultra launched: at this price, and with health features that largely overlap with the much cheaper Apple Watch Series line, this is a watch for people who specifically need its outdoor and safety features — not a general upgrade pick.
Pros
- Satellite messaging works reliably off-grid
- Brighter always-on display is easier to read outdoors
- Multi-day battery life in low-power mode
- Rock-solid titanium build
Cons
- Still requires an iPhone for full functionality
- Health features overlap with cheaper Apple Watch models
- Bands remain expensive
